5 Valentines – It was Love at First Sight

In February of 2014 I met a very special man and the rest is history.

I had seen him across the barn the months prior, always catching my eye as he casually, and oh so coolly, walked past the barn to his stable, with a swish of his tail and a swagger in his step. He was tall, dark and ever so handsome – a total dream horse and one I could only have wished to be able to ride. Every time I saw him, he’d catch my eye and I would stop and look at him for just a second longer than all the others.

I was away skiing in France, when one afternoon back at the chalet I got a text from my friend, to say there was an advert in the tea room to say Hamish was up for loan a couple of days a week.

Now, I have to admit, initially as much as I loved the look of Hamish, I felt too nervous to put myself forward to loan a thoroughbred! But luckily enough my friend did that for me and before I knew it, I’d arranged to meet Elli and Hamish when I was back from France.

I was so nervous, I really don’t know why, but I felt I had no clue what I was doing. I’d never had a horse of my own to be responsible for, even just for a few days on loan. I suppose I felt a little bit out of my depth. But off I trotted round to the barn and there was Hamish, standing quietly and beautifully as ever.

I groomed him and chatted away to his owner Elli, who was so lovely and definitely put me at ease. Hamish stood there, as still as you like, so calm, so gentle and kind.

We got his tack out and he even put his head down for me to put on his bridle – a true gentleman. I think it was that moment I really fell head over heels for him.

We had a little walk, trot and canter round the school. I don’t know if you know the feeling? The one when you either haven’t ridden for a while or your so used to riding one horse, that the moment you ride another you feel like you’ve totally forgotten everything you know!? Well this is totally how I felt. I hadn’t been riding a huge amount before that and I didn’t do a good job of selling myself as a competent suitor for Hamish. Needless to say, it can’t have been as bad as I thought as Elli offered me two days a week with Hamish and of course, I said YES.

Over the following months our bond tightened and the opportunity came up for me to take Hamish on full time. I knew it was what I wanted to do, despite initial reservations from Mum about whether I had the time or the money.

It’s funny, because we spoke about it the other day and said how we couldn’t imagine life without Hamish now. It has never been a trouble or too much of an expense. But prior to accepting him full time, we couldn’t imagine having the time, nor money for him. It’s amazing how easily life adapts itself to new circumstances.

And ever since then, I’ve had Hamish on full loan and still do to this day. I am lucky enough to be able to share Hamish with his lovely owner who is so kind and trusting in me to make the day to day decisions and treat Hamish as my own.

There are so many things I love about Hamish, in my eyes he really is the perfect horse. He’s kind, calm and gentle. He definitely knows his own mind. He teaches me everything I need to know and always tries his best at whatever I choose to do with him. He can be fiery when he needs to be and has lots of character behind his kind and gentle persona. He has huge floppy ears, the kindest eyes and the softest tan muzzle. Honestly… I don’t imagine I will ever love a horse quite the same way I love Hamish.

He will forever be my valentine and I know he’ll never let me down on a date night; my number one. He’s set the bar extremely high for any other men who try to enter my life, I know that much…! And, you know, I really think he’d tell me if he didn’t approve. His grumpy face would totally give the game away.

Wishing you the happiest Valentines Day. I have to say, I do think people should be grateful and show love and appreciation to those they care about everyday without prompt, but hey, on V-Day they deserve extra carrots…
