An Interview with Zoe from Honest Riders – The Ethical Equestrian Clothing & Horse Care Brand

I met Zoe, the founder of Honest Riders at the last Hiho & Co meet. How great it was to meet someone so genuinely lovely, with a business that not only reflects her own beliefs and passions without being in anyway ‘preachy’, whilst merging that so perfectly with the needs of her customers. Zoe has nailed it.

I think any of us horsey folk will have heard of Honest Riders or seen their slogan t-shirts and sweatshirts, if not already having a few items in our wardrobes. And if you haven’t heard of them – where have you been?!

Honest Riders are an ethical equestrian clothing and horse care brand, for riders on a mission.

I’ve gained rather the collection of Honest Riders apparel and I couldn’t fault any aspect of my purchases, from the point of ordering, to quick delivery, receiving my items beautifully wrapped in tissue paper and the quality of their clothing – it felt like a real luxury purchase.

Before I carry on, I must tell you that their items even came packaged in eco-friendly recyclable packaging, their ethical message effortlessly runs throughout every aspect of what they do.

I am totally in love every single one of my t-shirts and sweatshirts. I wear them all the time, from the yard to the coffee shop – they’re so versatile and I’m so grateful that finally, I’m able to wear my ‘horsey clothes’ out in the real world too, without looking out of place!

I can honestly say they’re a real favorite of mine – I really do go to wear my Honest Riders tees more than anything else in my wardrobe at the moment. They are so soft, completely true to size, comfy and super stylish. You can wear them with pretty much anything.

Want to know more… well look no further! I caught up with Zoe, the very lovely and clever founder of Honest Riders, to find out more about the brand.

What’s the vision behind the Honest Riders Brand?

Honest Riders was started because I felt there was a genuine gap in the market for a brand that had good solid ethical values at its heart. Our ethos is that equestrian style shouldn’t just look good, it should do good as well.

As an animal and nature lover, I found myself feeling frustrated about the impact we’re having and have had on our planet. When we first set up, I spent time thinking and investigating how we could be more sustainable in everything we do.

As well as the slogan range, we also sell natural horse care. I was shocked when I discovered the amount of chemicals in the horse care products I used to use and knew there had to be a better way. Over the course of the year before Honest Riders launched, I set about trying and testing a whole host of natural horse care products from some amazing brands, on my own horses. I then picked the ones I loved best and could vouch for and started selling those!

We really want to represent an uprising in the equestrian world. We’ve pledged to source our garments from factories that subscribe to the ‘Fair Wear Foundation’ and use fabrics that are environmentally friendly. We’re endeavoring to reduce plastic consumption and use sustainable materials in everything we do – from the packaging your order arrives in, right back to the methods used in manufacturing our goods. I really hope this is a vision that people can get behind.

Could you tell us a little bit about the charity support you give, on the purchase of your slogan clothing range?

Sure! When I first started Honest Riders, it was really important to me to find a way of giving something back. There are several companies giving a ‘percentage’ of their profits to charities, but I wanted to give a tangible value so that people can see exactly how much they are contributing. We give £5 for every sweatshirt and £2 for every t-shirt we sell.

We picked three charities that are all doing amazing work when it comes to equine welfare. We assign each of our slogans to a specific charity so that you know exactly which cause you’re helping!

Two Hearts donates to Retraining of Racehorses

Centre Line and Drop it Like It’s trot donate to World Horse Welfare

No Scope No Hope and Free Rein donate to Pablos Horse Sanctuary

Which of the Honest Riders’ slogans best suits you, Zoe?

Definitely ‘Centre Line’! I’m a bit of a dressage diva and I often think wearing one of these slogans helps me bring my best game in the arena. I also love the fact I can wear it in the ‘outside world’ without looking like I’ve just stepped off the yard. It looks fab with jeans and non-horsey people have no idea what the slogan means!

Is there anything we can be looking out for in 2019?

So much exciting stuff!! We introduced a new range of slogan wear that launched in April this year – featuring some new styles AND some new slogans (fingers crossed you love them!). We’re also introducing some other equestrian wear to the range so keep your eyes peeled.

From a horse care perspective, we’ve got some truly amazing products launching for summer. I’ve spent the last year or so testing these on my own horses so I know they work, which is really important.

I cannot wait to see what’s to come – I know I’ll certainly be keeping my eye out for any new releases from Honest Riders and I’m excited to try some more of their horse care products too.

It’s certainly very exciting to have a new brand in the equestrian market which is an innovator in a more sustainable equestrian lifestyle – they are really setting the bar high for change and I’m sure we’ll see lots of other brands following the movement, to keep up with the Riders on a Mission looking to make more sustainable choices.
